Historical Beer - Gruit / Ancient Herbed Ale
Our Modern Take on an Ancient Tradition
Before hops became the dominant ingredient in beer, brewers used a blend of herbs and botanicals known as gruit to add bitterness, aroma, and even medicinal properties to their brews. This ancient brewing tradition dates back to medieval Europe, where each region had its own mix of local plants, creating beers with complex herbal and spicy flavors.
Our take on this historic style, 53 Gruit Ale, is an aromatic blend of carefully selected herbs, with Yarrow (Coada Șoricelului) leading the way, followed by Ground Ivy (Rotunjoara) and Goat’s Rue (Ciumărea). These are complemented by a diverse selection of botanicals, including Fennel, Sage, Rosemary, Peppermint, Dill, Ginger, and Lemon Balm.
